My daughter had to go here as an outpatient for tests after she was assaulted at a friend\s house. She was under 16 at the time, traumatised and had repeatedly told me that she would not undergo any tests or talk to anyone unless I was present. We arrived to find the door was locked and we had to ring the buzzer and explain why we there. A nurse came to open the door but at first insisted that only my daughter could go in and I would have to wait outside. Upon my daughter absolutely refusing to go in without me she reluctantly allowed me to enter the building with her. After a short wait another nurse called my daughter into a side room and tried to bar me from going in with her. Again my daughter refused to go without me and I was reluctantly allowed to accompany her. The nurses were pleasant and kind to my daughter, but absolutely awful to me. The implication was that I was an over-protective and/or controlling parent and nobody listened to our attempts to explain that my daughter wanted me there with her, rather than the other way around. At one point I was virtually ordered from the room, since teenagers tell other people things they wouldn\t tell their parents. This may well be true, but as my daughter refused to talk unless I was present, I\m not sure they learned anything. Throughout the appointment I was treated like the enemy. I\m aware that not all teenagers (myself included at that age) want their parents with them for an appointment as sensitive as this, but this was not our situation. Nobody there seemed to realise that not all situations and not all parent-child relationships are the same. Nobody listened to me when I explained that my daughter wanted and needed me there, and when my daughter attempted to explain it she was brushed off with the suggestion that she was just saying what I wanted to hear. There was a complete lack of understanding or acknowledgement of my daughter\s wishes which was as upsetting as it was unnecessary.
