I used Care Response for several years to help me care for an elderly relative. I must have met at least 20 of their carers and every single one was well trained, did her job well and treated us with kindness and respect. During the time I used them we had some bad winters but they never abandoned us and always got through. I still see one or two when I am out and about and they always say hello and stop and chat if they have time.
The one downside is that you get lots of different carers coming in. The first month I think we saw 12 different carers in 4 weeks, which was a bit unsettling.
The admin wasn't so good. Their scheduling was a bit bizarre: you'd think they 'd put their regular visits down first and then fit the others in aound them but they didn't and it didn't pay to mention it. When I complained once that the carers had been coming too early, somebody turned up at 7.50am one Saturday when the agreed time was 9-10. If a carer was running really late and asked them to phone you they didn't usually bother. They sometimes ignored letters or didn't call back when they said they would. It's annoying but you get used to it and the carers are really good so you put up with it.
However, there was one incident that made me angry. I lost some papers and I rang up and asked the Supervisor to check if if one of the carers had picked them up inadvertently with her own folder. After a week the same Supervisor rang back and asked in a very menacing manner, "Are you accusing one of the carers of stealing your papers?" Her reaction was absolutely uncalled for. They had no monetary value and I had made it crystal clear that I wasn't accusing anybody of anything wrong. It really soured our relationship for sometime, even after I found the papers at home. |
