Cataracts are cloudy areas of the lens of the eye that are normally clear. They can cause blurred vision and other sight problems which can affect your enjoyment of everyday life and your ability to work. Cataracts can usually be removed in a straightforward procedure lasting 20-45 minutes.

    Why you might need it
Cataracts are very common, particularly among older people. Its no surprise, therefore, that surgery to remove them is the most common operation performed in the UK, with more than 300,000 procedures carried out each year according to clinical sources.

If you have cataracts you will usually have blurred, cloudy or misty vision. This happens because light cannot pass through the clouded lens to the back of the eye. Or you may see small spots or patches where your vision is less clear. Other symptoms might include double vision or finding it unpleasant to look at bright lights because of the amount of glare.

Our eyesight is fundamental to both our ability to function and for enjoying lifes pleasures - such as reading or watching television. It is frustrating to lose the ability to do these activities and have our enjoyment of life curtailed.

Surgery is the only proven effective treatment for cataracts.

According to guidance issued by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, cataract surgery improves vision and is also associated with improvements in activity, anxiety, depression, confidence and quality of life.

One of our highly trained consultant ophthalmologists will be able to offer you an initial consultation within a few days of contacting us. If you decide to book your cataract surgery with us youll be able to book an operation at a time and place that suits you.

This will usually involve a 20-45 minute procedure carried out after you have had anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye surface. Your surgeon will replace the faulty lens with a new one.

While the NHS offers excellent eye care, some local NHS commissioners are limiting surgery to those who have particularly severe symptoms and waiting lists are long.

Consultant unreliable honesty questionable. NHS liaison is lovely but very much let down by other factors. Push and encourage you to pay privately instead. Say one thing then dont follow through. Would not recommend!

A lovely hospital. All the staff I was involved with were wonderful, the hospital is very clean and well looked after. Right from my initial consultation, operation and follow up appointment I felt very valued. The food choice was amazing.

As private patient paying over £6000 the organisation of my care was absolutely appalling. There were clear issues with patient safety. I requested from the consultants secretary a ttelephone consultation with the anaesthetist to discuss a previous key hole surgery where I had become very ill in theatre. I sent in a copy of my anaesthetic report for the anaesthetist information. I requested in writing that a selection of dates and times were to given to me for this to go ahead. The secretary never arranged. I live in Somerset and was coming up to Spire Leicester to have an Endostim fitted and it was agreed that I could have a telephone pre op assessment. I again requested on a selection of dates and times for this consultation to go ahead from the secretary and yet it was not arranged instead I was called ad hock by the pre assessment nurse and asked if she could do it then. I said no as it was not appropriate. It was agreed that this consultation would take place the following day. However when the nurse rang me the following day she informed that she was doing ward duties and might be called away. I agreed to continue as it was close to Christmas and time was running out to get this appointment sorted. I insisted on an MRSA test being conducted and it was agreed the nurse would contact my GP practice to arrange. The nurse forgot to arrange, I ended up arranging it myself. I also asked for a second telephone consultation with the anaesthetist to discuss post op pain relief and again the secretary failed to arrange as requested by me despite having had three weeks to arrange. The secretary also failed to send me the medical code for my procedure for me to get authorisation from my medical insurers. I made a verbal complaint which was blatantly ignored at the time regarding the above. My experience has been horrific in this hospital with me coming round in recovery from my GA in extreme pain which should have never happened. Prior to my surgery I finally saw the anaesthetist who was adamant that paracetamol IV would be suitable pain relief post surgery. I was shocked at this as I had already told him paracetamol does not work on me. He was adamant opioids would not be necessary post surgery. I ended up having morphine in recovery and for the duration of my stay in this hospital. Although the nurses were pleasant it appeared they too had a problem with me the patient being in pain post op. I had a GA , morphine in recovery followed by me having to request further pain relief 6 hrs post op this again being morphine. I needed a pee in the early hours following my surgery and had the above meds the nurse came and dropped the side of my bed down but did not help me get of the bed or assist me to the bathroom. That is an absolute disgrace. My complaint regarding my experience at this hospital is vast and at all levels. I am having issues with the complaints department as there are significant problems there to. My surgeon was super but rest appalling.
