Alas the focus here is on filling beds and making £'s irregardless as to wether the home has an infrastructure to meet the needs of its residents. I am not sure if this can be attributed all to Abbey Health Care or is a consequence of a failure of the whole system in meeting the needs of the elderly-needing to get people out of hospital to free up beds for emergency care plus, the Government's failure to fund, review & address this growing problem. The consequence of this is the resources here are stretched to capacity with care being very basic and mostly physical, what happened to the 'holistic model' I.e the whole person, it appears once you go into Nursing Care it doesn't matter. There has to be an acceptable standard of care, diet, social activity and enough staff with training to give time to its residents. Finally it needs a management that supports its staff on the floor, gets out of its office, understands the needs of its residents, sees what change is needed and begins to implement it- after all change comes from effective leadership. |

Gives a good impression of layout and facilities. Staff are mostly kind and professional, however weekends and holiday periods suffer from an insufficient number of staff, and you can wait a long time to have the phone or door answered as a caller/visitor. Messages may not be passed on because staff are too busy. Clothing and belongings of residents frequently go missing, including expensive items such as glasses and false teeth. This is viewed as the norm by staff. There seems to be no system of separating each individual's washing bundle. Staff spend a lot of time filling in forms whilst at the same time being responsible for resident care. It would seem more appropriate to overlap staff cohorts such that once care duties are finished the paperwork begins (why are records not online?), clearly producing a higher labour cost. Management seems to be focused on finance and capacity rates, rather than taking a pro-active service management role. The link between providing an excellent service thereby feeding recommendation does not seem to have been made. There are two 'user communities' who need communicating with, residents and residents' families and friends. There is a paucity of activities, though very good when they infrequently occur. The bathing facilities are basic, if one bath is shared by so many, why not have a spa bath, imagine how that would feel for someone with limited mobility. Residents are lucky if they have one bath a week. I wonder if the mangers have tried getting a wheelchair through the front doors? It is just a matter of design fit for purpose. I would highly recommend that some effort is put into developing the service to include consideration of what would bring some joy into residents lives - this is a visioning role of management which is sorely absent. Food (cheapest) medication, reasonable cleanliness, warmth and TV are not enough. |
