Reception staff and doctors and nurses need mental health training and also need to be more tactful and aware when dealing with patients. Have cried after talking to staff, feeling like i'm not believed. |

Brilliant work carried out by my GP and his medical team, although I've found their colleagues in admin to be belliegerent and dismissive when I've phoned to discuss appointments and referrals. There did seem to be a contrast between the friendly and reassuring doctor/nursing assistants; and the blunt, off-hand attitude that came across from the ladies on reception. On balance I would recommend for the quality of care provided, but not for the cutstomer service. |

Unfortunately I echo what a previous patient has said about mental health training and the attitude of some reception staff. I was told I looked fine regards mental health issues which is unhelpful at best. I requested a referral for a review but was told I didn’t need one. Strange given the issues I had been having, asking for help isn’t easy so to be dismissed and feel dismissed as a time waster or a faker feels very degrading and embarrassing. We tend to try to present in public our best selves and to be able to say things are not right deserves to be heard physical and mental health often go together but we need both to function in life. Surely we are in a time where we now understand the parity between the two. I was told the practise were used to healthy students who play sport and hence my initial concerns about this practise. I feel like I was not offered the right help and it has had a bad effect on my mental state and now physical state and my time here in Exeter. Avoid this practice if you have mental health issues or have complex needs and are effected by the way people talk to you. I’m sure it is a case of over run staff and under trained /educated doctors regards mental health and communication skills but in this day and age with so many students who will have mental health issues as well as physical there should be better support and less of a demeaning attitude when people ask for help. |
