    I would just like to leave a positive review, i visited Birkenshaw med centre for my appointment with the practice nurse yesterday the 12.4.17. Such a lovely person they put me at ease explained what they were going to do and the procedure. Absolute credit to the practice. Thankyou. Just sorry i didnt get their name.

    Huge waiting room but can never get to see a doctor here which I find strange. I waited over an hour to see a doctor but I never saw one then receptionist told me to go to A&E she was that concerned but A&E sent me to see the doctor. Then reception being so concerned told me to go to Birstall in 2 hours time. My head was done in.

    Tried on two occasions to get an appointment, last month and today. Practice will not book appointments in advance. I need to see a female doctor and I’m happy to wait a few days or so. Was told appointments are released at 8am and I would have to ring at 8am or wait before practice opens to try get an appointment. Explained I’m struggling to ring at 8am due to work commitments and was told there was nothing they could do. They don’t have any appointments available in advance and was told they are having lots of complaints about the appointment system, they have a shortage of GP’s and sorry I would have to ring at 8am tomorrow. Even if I try again tomorrow there is no guarantee of an appointment. Was told I could go to Dewsbury hospital drop in service however it would not be a female doctor. My reply was why should I go all the way to Dewsbury when I live in Birkenshaw and want to go to my own doctor that I have used for over 12 years. Shockingly bad and appalled!! My partner rang the Blackburn road main surgery as I became upset,explained my situation and they said an appointment was there for 8.50am Wednesday 12th Sept with a female doctor however they could not book me in as the appointment would not be released until 8am Weds. So back to square one as I can ring at 8am like 20 other people, to not get through until 8.10am to find someone managed to get through on the phone before me and bagged that appointment. Terrible appointments system which offers no solution unless you already have a medical emergency and you may be able to have a GP visit.

    Thank you for your comment. I am sorry that you feel the service we provide is 'appalling'. All of the staff work very hard to try to deliver the best possible service to all of our patients. Appointments system - We have a number of appointments that release at different times in order to try to maximise availability and ensure that some are always available. Appointments for Book on the day release at 0800 and again at 1200 every day at both locations. In addition we have appointments that release every 48 hours, 7 and 14 days - all of which are also available to book online. I have just checked and can see that all appointments available to be booked 7 and 14 days in advance have been booked by patients. However there are additional appointments that will become available as the 48 hours, 7, 14 days period past. 8 appointments will become available tomorrow. In addition, we have a Duty Doctor who will triage and see or call, give advice to patients if there is an urgent need. The caller passes the information to the GP via the receptionist and GP reviews and makes a decision based on clinical need. Locum GPs are brought in when the Practice Doctors are off on leave or if we become aware that there is a shortfall of appointments. We try very hard to ensure continuity of care but will also balance the appointment offering to ensure that patient can see a Doctor. If a patient considers their issue is urgent then we would always recommend attendance at A and E or to a walk in centre if the patient cannot wait for whatever reason. The appointments at Dewsbury Health Centre are an enhanced access program and the GPs are able to both refer and request blood tests. The practice carries out this function on receiving a request from the GP the patient has seen.
