World class bad. Have a lot of sympathy for medical profession through the pandemic, but over the last few years the care from the Simpson Centre has fallen off a cliff. They fail to record appointments, have test results go missing, do not retain records properly, have contact systems that seem designed to keep patients away and have secretaries that ignore you and are plain rude. Of course you can never make an appointment or see the same doctor either. Virtually a total waste of time even trying to get care here.

When I first joined I thought this was the best surgery ever, and was able to get appointments easily and get to know one doctor. Now, I can’t fault the doctors themselves too much but I haven’t had the same doctor more than once for about a year and a half, I rarely get an appointment when I want/need it and the receptionists are the rudest I have ever come across. I just spoke on the phone with one of the receptionists and asked for an emergency appointment - there was not any and she told me to go to the minor injuries - all I said was “oh gosh, really?” - I was not doubting there wasn’t any, but was just upset/frustrated - but in a sarcastic and irate tone, the receptionist replied “I have already told you there are no appointments, go to minor injuries”...I proceeded to tell her that there was no need to be so rude with her tone and talk to a patient in that manner, and that she needed to be a bit more professional and understand that the people that call in for emergency appointments aren’t well. She got more and more irate. This is not the first time this has happened, I have NEVER had a good experience with a receptionist here - I do not know the name of the woman I spoke to on the phone, but I can only assume it is the same person that is usually there. Everyone I have spoken to at the practice in the waiting room has always agreed that she is rude as well! I have also had to pay for private doctors elsewhere, as after two years of complaining about stomach issues, and them saying there was nothing wrong with me, I couldn’t take not being believed anymore just because I am young (22). I am now with a private practitioner who assured me that is a severe issue with my stomach and I am not living in a make believe world. If you want nice receptionists and a regular doctor that stays the same, don’t bother going to the Simpson centre.

I’ve been a patient of the Simpson Centre for 16 years and the doctors that I have seen in the past do their jobs well. However, on the other hand, the receptionist staff are unhelpful, judgemental and belittling - contradictory to what it says on the Simpson Centre website of “The telephone will be answered promptly and courteously.” After having the flu for 3 weeks now (and continuously using over the counter medication, showing no improvement) I thought that I would try to book a same day appointment. After calling 14 times, I finally got through to the appropriate person only to be questioned to the severity of my illness and continuously being asked if it was a medical emergency in a very judgemental tone. If I had a medical emergency, I would’ve instead called the Emergency Services instead of my GP. I then asked for clarification about what is classified as an “emergency” appointment, to which the receptionist said was “an appointment that wasn’t routine.” At this point I was quite upset and wanted to end the call. The receptionist then explained that this questioning and approach was “surgery protocol” and suggested that I should go to the minor injuries unit at the hospital - personally I view minor injuries for people who have suffered a physical injury and not an illness, therefore I was quite confused. Also, it left me questioning whether the “protocol” of the surgery would coincide with the well-being of their patients. After ending the call, I attempted to book a “routine” appointment via the Simpson Centre automated system, under the slot of “the next available appointment with any doctor” and I was told that there were no appointments that met my requirements. As of now, I still have no appointment and I am confused as to what my next steps are. Personally, I believe that the receptionist staff would benefit from some training on improving their communication skills and empathy towards patients in their moment of need.
