My elderly parents have been patients for nearly 30 years
Recently my mother, who's 82 with extensive arthritis, neuropathy and is at risk for falls, has had to go back and forth to the surgery and Boots the Chemist (attached to the surgery) 5 times regarding a repeat prescription. It took 14 days for her to get all the items which she'd ordered. One of the reception staff was rude to her when my mother explained what the problem was 5 days after she put the original request in,and the prescription for the missed items didn't go through to the GP until 3 days afterwards,
and even then one of the items was still missing.
At the end of our tethers as she'd been back 3 times, I spoke to the clerical staff team leader who apologised on behalf of the rude receptionist and told me that my fathers prescriptions, including inhalers, all go to the Superdrug pharmacy who do his dosette box. 2 days later my father ordered some new eye drops and later that day was told the script was with the pharmacy. The following day he went to Supedrug to collect them and they weren't there as the script had been sent through to Boots!
There's no continuation of care and although, because they're elderly,my parents both have a named GP , neither of them have seen this GP for at least 4 years and with elderly people with ongoing problems it's hard work to have to keep explaining the same thing again and again to different GP's. It must also be difficult for the GP's.
Unless you call early in the morning you can't get an appointment for 3 weeks. Sometimes they'll get a GP or Nurse Practitioner to call and discuss your problem, but for elderly people this isn't ideal as they often can't provide very reliable information re their current health problem, have communication and other health problems and in the case of my parents, memory problems.
Memory problems are something which nobody at the practice seems to really acknolwedge, appreciates or cater for. Certainly nobody ever writes any information down for either of my parents, so unless I attend with them, it's often difficult to know what's going on , although usually one of the GP's will call me if I get really confused or have questions, and that's helpful.
I think it would be useful if the surgery had one or two elderly care Nurse Practitioners who specialised in elderly medical problems. |

I attended the practice on the 09/01/19, I was seen by a doctor and informed I needed to make appointments to have a number of tests and an X-ray carried out. I then went to the nurses reception where I was to make the appointments. I found there a very professional and helpful member of staff, I explained what I was told by the doctor.
This staff member was very courteous , helpful and made the making of appointments stress free . I,was accommodated with appointments that suited my availability around my employment and was very impressed with her attention to detail. This is in my view excellent service. |
