Spencer Grove Care Home

Choosing the place that is to become home for Mum was probably the hardest thing I have done. I looked at many residential care homes before deciding that Spencer Grove was the place that Mum would call home. I knew Spencer grove had won many awards, but that was just part of the decision. For me it was more about the welcome we received when turned up unannounced asking to have a look round. I felt that nothing was hidden, - I was welcome to spend time looking round asking questions, and getting a feel for the atmosphere. The question I asked myself was 'if i had to go into a care home, which one would I feel most at home, and comfortable in?', - the choice was simple. Mum has now been there over 4 years, initially having a room on the residential care floor, but as her condition deteriorated and she was beginning to require more care, she moved to a room on the Nursing care floor. the transition went smoothly, - the surroundings and staff were familiar, and the room almost identical so familiar. Mums condition continues to deteriorate, and the staff continue to care for her, - not just look after her, but I know they care about her. I am not saying it is perfect, - nowhere could be , - it's not the home she used to live in, it's not my home, but it's the next best thing. All the staff are approachable, kind and caring - carers, nurses, managers, cooks, everyone. It really does feel like being part of a big family. they care for mum, but they also make sure that I and my family are supported, and kept informed of any changes in mum's condition. Nothing phases the staff. Mum's condition means that sometimes she is not the easiest to look after, but they know her and know how to manage her and her behavior. I could write more, but before I finish I must mention the food, - good freshly cooked food is always on offer. Home made cakes, home made wholesome nutritious food.Ii often visit mum at mealtimes, and have seen the delicious meals, and the trouble the staff go to to provide nutritious meals that will tempt those residents that are reluctant to eat
