Village Homecare (VHC) provided excellent care for my mother for 3 years.
My mother has very particular and complicated care needs. In the last 3 years her physical disability worsened but she was determination to hold onto her independence and stay at home. She is mentally sharp, often anxious, and probably has OCD. Many carers have found it hard to work with her, as she would not change her ways. For two years before VHC got involved, we had been struggling to get adequate evening care for Mum. No one agency could provide both evening and morning care, so we ended up with two. We had tried recruiting personal assistants, used five other care agencies, phoned dozens of others, and done care calls ourselves. No-one else was able to keep up providing the evening calls Mum required.
VHC changed all that. They were able to provide consistent and reliable care for three years, and keep Mum living at home longer than she would have done otherwise. Their carers were kind, helpful, respectful of Mum's unusual ways, and often went the extra mile. VHC were relaxed about accommodating changes to Mum's care needs, both planned and unplanned. They were flexible about changing times of care, and increasing the length of calls and adding afternoon calls when they were needed. They kept Mum safe without getting caught up with unnecessary rules. They were quick to report problems and deal with them when they arose without blaming Mum, as some had done. They were always polite and helpful and generous with their time, in person and on the phone.
I should add that a further difficulty in securing good care for Mum was that she lives in the countryside 8 miles out of Leicester. Many care companies regarded that as too far away to provide home care. VHC had no problems here, as a small company based in Market Bosworth, and their carers were able to get through in all weathers.
We particularly appreciated VHC's flexiblity in Mum's last year at home, when she was becoming more and more disabled and needing more care, and it sometimes wasn't clear what care she would need week to week. It was only when Mum got to the stage of needing carers around 24/7 that she had to go into a care home. Although she wasn't able to continue living at home in the end, VHC helped make her last years there possible. |
