I have found both the pre-admission and admission process at this hospital to be confusing and stressful. This has added to my overall anxiety and worry of going into hospital to have major nasal surgery. I had 2 pre-assessment appointments, the 2nd one was with the Consultant Anaesthetist as I have got various medical conditions. They told me I would be admitted to hospital as an inpatient to stay overnight, which I was relieved to hear. They said they would have a meeting with the Consultant Anaesthetist I would be having, to decide where my surgery would be taking place the RNTNE Hospital or UCH. I was told once everything had been decided, someone would ring me. As no one rang me, I tried ringing and eventually after a couple of weeks got to speak to a pre-assessment nurse. To cut a long story short, I found out from the pre-assessment nurse I wasn't being admitted as an inpatient overnight stay. The admission letter confirmed this and said my length of stay was DAYCASE. This shocked and upset me. I spoke to the admissions officer about this on a couple of occasions and also rang B ward. I was basically told this was a discussion I should have with my doctors on the day of my surgery. As far as I was concerned this decision had already been made by the Consultant Anaesthetist. Eventually, the admissions officer agreed to let the ward know I would be staying overnight. I decided to ring B ward again and spoke to another nurse who finally told me that the ward I was being admitted to was a Day Surgery ward that you can stay overnight in. I had previously been led to believe it was an inpatient ward. That is why my letter says DAYCASE and not INPATIENT. The nurse told me there are only 3 wards at the RNTNE Hospital and they are all day surgery wards, On the Women's and Men's wards you can stay overnight and on the Children's ward you can't. There are no inpatient wards at this hospital. I feel I should have had this explained to me when I first queried why I hadn't been booked in as an inpatient, It took me quite a few weeks to find out this information. I have never heard of Day Surgery wards where you can stay overnight before, which is very confusing! I just hope my surgery goes well. My ENT Consultant is very nice and I have a lot of confidence in his abilities as a surgeon. Original Comment Report... |
