My mother reached the stage, at 98, where she could no longer live alone in her bungalow. We moved her to the Cyder Barn which is the closest such home to me and was a 1.75 hour drive for my brother to visit. We visited about 8 alternative homes both in Buckinghamshire, close to me in Somerset and in locations between the two brothers. We believe we made the right decision as the proximity of the Cyder Barn meant I could visit our mother almost every day, although it was difficult for her to leave her surroundings at the age of 98. The Cyder Barn's greatest strength is its staff who provided a consistently high level of personal care and attention throughout the 21 months of her residency. The staff were very attentive, kind, thoughtful and caring throughout. The managers were very helpful and kept the family informed of her condition as she gradually deteriorated to "end of life". We moved her to a more expensive ground floor room roughly half-way through when it became available and this proved to be very good with doors opening to the rear garden - it was light and larger than the earlier room in the older part of the home. The dining and sitting areas have space limitations and could be improved with better furnishings but the staff make the best of what is available. The food was to a high standard and prepared and served by a jolly chef. |
