Overton House Care Home

There is a caring attitude and staff and management are responsive to your relative’s values and preferences. The building design helps because it is built around a quad and residents can walk around. The lounge areas are all interconnected and so things can get quite loud. The events co-ordinator is amazingly good and activities range from making sandwiches to developing music libraries for individuals. Other carers also get involved with activities so it does not feel as something added on top. Food is provided from a frozen supplier and there is a good range. Lunch menus can be very tasty. It is probably as good as most care homes. I would prefer more fresh fruit and veg and my mother was unhappy with the amount of baked beans that she was given. There is an above average staffing level, but the reason for that is that some residents are very challenging. There was an influx of challenging behaviour which seemed to correlate with an increase in injuries and that is why I moved my mother out. Once this has been settled down, I would seriously suggest anyone wanting a caring home considers Overton. You will have to evaluate the risk posed from other residents yourself at that time. I particularly appreciated that that the staff worked well with relatives. They accepted a risk level knowing how important it was to my mother to walk despite poor mobility. This alone improved her quality of life a great deal. As with any care home there are better and worse carers, but some are outstanding. You may find it is a bit smelly at times, and I would like to see the manager on the floor setting the standards more. The ethos was largely determined by the events co-ordinator. But this is not nearly as important as personal connection with carers and kindness and happiness. These is a genuine flexibility to accommodate resident preferences and it is not too institutional compared with other homes I have experienced
