My Mum has advanced Alzheimers at the age of 69. She refused nearly every bit of support we offered her relying on one carer visit a day to provide a meal. Things came to ahead when she was found wandering and the police called us twice. I arranged a visit from the home to assess Mum on the Thursday and she was in Derby Heights by the Monday. Mum was taken in and got settled by the Derbyshire dementia Rapid Response Team under the guise of it being 2 weeks of respite and she has not left. She has been in over 4 months now and we could not be happier. The facilities are just as nice as they appear on the pictures. Staff are amazing and are very accommodating and really care about the people living there. There are activities every morning and afternoon and Mum always joins in. Food is really good with proper sit down meals in dining rooms and there are always snacks available. The 'café' area is great for visitors and there is a lovely selection of drinks and cake/biscuits. Ok, this place is not cheap and as we are complete self funders it is not easy but you know what, it is worth it. You can find a home £100- £150 cheaper per week but my Mum can afford it and deserves this place after all the years of hard work she and my Dad put in. My Mum still tries to leave but that's part of her condition. She is not safe or has the capacity to live on her own. If you ask her what she thinks of the home she says 'it's lovely, the staff are really kind and funny and the food is good but its too nice for her and she can not afford to live there forever.' Well you know what, we are renting her house so she can live there forever and if we need to we will top up her care fees ourselves. This will be Mums home until either her care needs change and she can no longer be supported in a care home or she dies. Please, go around and have a look. Speak to the staff and visit the Dementia Ward if that's what you need. What you will find it a lovely place that looks more like a 5* hotel than a care home with the staff and facilities to match the 5* status.
