My daughter spent nearly 7 months in Cygnet Ealing. At first I was a bit concerned as I’d read all the above reviews.however,it has improved greatly. The girls rooms are clean and modern with good en-suite shower rooms. The staff were fantastic. There were many rules to get used to but they were all for a good reason. My daughter found it hard at first but soon got used to it and she gradually earned new privileges after a while. When the girls are well enough they were taken out to enjoy a coffee and a snack out in a cafe. They also did yoga and many other activities. Sadly sometimes they were a bit short staffed as most of the NHS is. But the staff that were there were lovely. My daughter soon started to gain weight and get better and better. She was allowed to gradually spend more time at home so she got used to ‘normal’ life. She finally came home in January and is continuing to do well. Without her time in Cygnet I don’t think she would be as well as she is now. We are very grateful that she was fortunate to get a bed in such a great hospital. Thank you

Dreadful place which uses outdated treatment models - punitive, restrictive and not outcome focused. The therapy is good but the day to day living is terrifying with institutionalised patients, BMI based targets for patients which is very rigid. I had very concerns around training, medication errors, staff sleeping on one to one observations and tick box practice such as retrospectively filling in observations and risk assessments. It seems that the focus here is in getting a good CQC rating rather than being patient focused. There are a few very dedicated staff but they are run ragged and fighting a losing battle. The living arrangements are nit fit fit purpose with mouldy bathrooms, broken fire doors and physical observation tools faulty or not there at all. There is lack of awareness of infection control with staff (mainly agency) having jewellery and painted nails, old fashioned carpets and divider curtains used and never cleaned. Very very shoddy. An accident waiting to happen.

i was a patient on the EDU from June till November 2016 having been transferred there to be closer to home. Initially i thought the care was fantastic, they are extremely conscientious with new patients and monitor everyone closely so the eating disorder has no chance to get away with anything. this is brilliant when you are a new extremely ill patient. However. You get no privacy as 90% of the rooms are shared occupancy. being a very small ward, you can hear a lot of noise, including when patients are being restrained. bedrooms doors have to always be open (day and night- except if there is a restraint-), the only fresh air easily available is via a small balcony, which is also where the smokers go (i am not a smoker, and having to breathe in ciggie smoke is not good for health). And the cleaners spend barely two minutes cleaning the bedrooms, bed sheets are only changed once a week. Patients are not allowed to do anything food and drink related for themselves unless they have reached a healthy BMI and not allowed home until this BMI either. Therapy does not begin until your BMI is 15, and all groups are subject to BMI. Meal times are ofc very strict, however too strict, you are not allowed to leave the dining room until a specific amount of time is up (mostly 45 minutes) no matter what BMI/STAGE you are at, and never allowed to have anything unsupervised. there are also patients there that have been under the hospitals care for over 4 years!! I found my stay at Cygnet Ealing very damaging and, having only been home 2 weeks, still have nightmares from my stay. Yes the hospital does get your BMI up, however preparation for 'the real world' is extremely limited and the care is hardly individualised. As with many inpatient HCA's- very few of them are properly trained in mental health and/or eating disorders, though there was/is one HCA at Cygnet Ealing who was/is amazing and I already really miss talking to.
