Words cannot describe how awful my experience of this hospital was. I was an NHS patient, and referred here for a condition called adenomyosis, which can ONLY be cured by hysterectomy. I was extremely unwell by the time I came to hospital.
The first consultant I saw refused to believe I had adenomyosis, even though it had been diagnosed by a scan, and told me it is 'very rare' (it isn't) so 'you do not have this condition'. When I asked about hysterectomy, he banged his fist on the table, and shouted, "DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO CALL ME A BUTCHER? DO YOU WANT THEM TO ASK, WHY HAS THIS MAN BUTCHERED THIS WOMAN FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER?" (Other than the fact she has a condition that can only be cured by hysterectomy, in order to save her career and her home?)
Naturally I asked for a second opinion, and refused to see this man again. This meant going back to the bottom of the waiting list. I had another scan, and again it showed adenomyosis, except even more severe than before. I saw another consultant, and he tried me on a drug called Zoladex, which improved my symptoms. I then waited many months before it was agreed I could have the surgery.
From the outset, I told the hospital I have a separate, complex health condition. I told them what it was, and what it meant. I also sent full details and my clinical history by email, with a specific request they were sent to the entire surgical team at an early stage, to avoid any nasty last minute surprises.
Two weeks before my surgery, after my partner and I had arranged our private and personal lives around it for several months, I had my pre op. Later that day, Fawkham Manor phoned and cancelled my surgery due to my other health condition 'on safety grounds'. This was due to the condition they knew about from the start, which I had asked them about, and which I had specifically emailed them about, to ensure this precise situation DID NOT HAPPEN.
I was then advised that, as I would have to have my surgery at a major NHS hospital, I had to go to the BOTTOM of the waiting list. And as if THAT was not bad enough, I found out yesterday (more than three weeks after my surgery was cancelled) that I had been forgotten about, and no referral had been made to the new hospital.
So I have no surgery date in sight, I am on a drug that is only safe for short term use (the limit of which I have now exceeded due to surgery delays), I am risking severe and permanent bone damage as a result, and all because nobody considered any of my medical history from the start. I did manage to speak to my consultant for my complex condition, who advised that Fawkham Manor were wrong in any event, that I am NOT a 'high risk' patient, and could safely have had my surgery there.
I have wasted almost a year of my life attending a hospital that were never going to help me anyway. I am unable to sleep at night, and terrified of the damage being caused to my bones. I would NEVER want this to happen to anybody else. Original Comment Report... |
