I had a breast reconstruction (after cancer) in April 2014, and have had some problems with the appointments system. 1. I turned up for a follow up appointment shortly after my op only to find it had been cancelled and no-one had phoned or written to me to tell me. Luckily the nurse made time to see me anyway, because they had asked them to book this additional follow up appointment in the first place because I was having some problems with a possible infection at my surgery site. They commented that they were double- or even triple- booked all of that day as more than one patient had been booked into the same time slots. 2. I had another follow up appointment with the surgeon in June 2014, where they dictated a letter for my file saying they wanted to see me again in 6 months. By March 2015 I still hadn't had a letter or phone call with this appointment so I phoned their PA to find out what was happening (thinking that perhaps I was mistaken, or that the surgeon had second thoughts and decided they didn't need to see me again quite so soon). The surgeon's PA found the letter in my file, confirmed they did still want to see me 6 months after the June appointment, but said no appointment had been booked for me because they must have forgotten. I now have an appointment in a couple of weeks. I know I need more surgery as breast reconstruction usually needs several operations, but this left me wondering if I would ever have heard from them again if I hadn't followed it up.

Reception staff in the plastic surgery hand outpatients are fantastic but unfortunately cannot rate the disorganisation involved in the decision making of the consultants. Blow hot cold hot cold and waste huge portions of your life going back and forwards for a year. Have achieved nothing but hassle. When you ask questions by using the formal methods the complaints dept correspond with you but the surgical directorate feel it is not necessary to reply to anyone at all. First of all excuses about moving hospitals then write and say they have not heard back from the team then say you will hear in due course. To top it all it is a basic wrong diagnosis but requiring splints for the actual diagnosis but sent to Hand Arthritis Course involving travel, time and hassle. Having been verbally abused by the head person previously they want me to go back there!? The best bit is having a diagnosis that does not involve Arthritis which has been made by a more senior consultant elsewhere but requiring splints and easiest way to obtain splints is to go on an arthritis course and a further visit to my abusers domain to get splints made over a year later after my first appointment at Frenchay. They seem to be great with trauma injury but regular stuff seems a let down and wish I had not set eyes on the place or seen most of those I have. The exception to this is the lovely receptionists in Plastic Surgery Outpatients, the Secretary and the receptionist at the Hand Clinic in Frenchay, they have all been spot on. It is a shame the system and those who work in it are such a disaster in reality. I apparently have to go on this course as it is the quickest way to get splints made and my GP is wanting me to do this route. So I have no choice but to attend this course, waste time and pollute the planet in doing as well as it costing money for something futile.

I had a breast reconstruction in April 2014 and overall had a much better experience than my mastectomy at Southmead (the old hospital not the new building). Nursing care before, during and after the op was very good - things like being given antisickness meds for when you come round from general anaesthetic make all the difference. I only had to wait about 1 hour for my op which is good because it is very tiring having to wait for hours and hours during which you are not even allowed to have a small drink of water. There were no admin mix ups this time. I was also impressed with the way their physiotherapists check that you can walk up and down stairs safely before you are allowed to go home - this didn't happen at Southmead. They were very short staffed particularly on one day when one of the nurses was sent home sick unexpectedly, which led to us having some problems in our part of the ward with personal care which ended up creating an even higher workload for the remaining nursing staff having to do extra cleaning that could have been avoided. There weren't enough nurses to help me get out of bed that day (couldn't get up on my own), so this delayed me getting my mobility back and tubes removed. We also had some problems with the food - our bay of the ward always seemed to be the last one to get meals brought to us, by which time our choice from the menu had often run out, the remaining food was cold, and on one occasion a lady was left her meal but no cutlery to eat it with.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for your feedback about the Breast Care Services at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT). I am pleased that surgically you had a very positive experience and that the after-care was also good, but I was disappointed to learn that the nursing team were stretched and that the ward hotel services were poor. Clearly receiving hot meals is an important part of the overall care package. A new Breast Care Centre will open on the Southmead site in the summer and this will allow NBT to deliver services from a much improved environment; I have included a link to the details: http://www.nbt.nhs.uk/bristolbreastcarecentre Surgical and related physiotherapy care will be delivered from the new Brunel Building, which again will ensure a much better patient experience. As part of a new initiative NBT have introduced a new role for a sister on each ward. This sister will not be directly involved in nursing care, but instead will be available to liaise with patients and their relatives and to immediately resolve any issues or problems (such as a poor meals service) and if necessary assist where staffing is unexpectedly reduced. I am sorry that you were not able to take advantage of this new system of supporting patients, but we are confident that future patients will benefit from the change. Thank you again for your comments which have been fed back to the departments and staff involved. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team.
