My mother is 85 years old and is unfortunately suffering from deep anxiety and depression, her family have all been trying to help mum, who has reached a very low state of mental health, we were becoming increasingly desperate, there seemed no one and no where to turn to. Her GP had visited mum three times in a week. Unless someone has experienced seeing a relative suffer from depression and mental illness, they cannot appreciate the difficulties we were facing. Eventually mum was admitted to the Pembleton Unit which specialises in older patients with dementia and mental illness. The staff at Pembleton have been nothing short of amazing , they all show understanding, compassion, consideration and all do such a fantastic job, Mum is being looked after both mentally and physically in the most professional way possible. The Pembleton Unit is a credit to the NHS , my family and i hope it will continue to provide this absolutely essential care to patients with mental issues, for as long as it is required. At the time my mother was 85 years old and I was in my mid 60’s. Mother was led to believe that she was taken there for rest bite. I was not advised until after the fact that she was taken in under a Section 2 by a social worker.
The whole place left a lot to be desired. Very little interaction by the staff with the patients. It appeared to me that they were just content making their observations on paper but no stimulation or interaction let alone conversation. I could not believe what I saw!
The food there was awful just microwaved junk food! Mother even complained about this but we were told it was a balanced meal with protein and nutrition - unbelievable.
The mixed wards were horrendous as mother was not allowed to lock her door even when she was dressing. Whilst I understand the rationale for this what I could not comprehend was when the door would just be opened by staff without even knocking - a total lack of respect for an elderly lady. Manners cost nothing.
When I sent to visit mother a male patient twice just opened the door within a few minutes. One lady was known to be screaming in the corridor late at night - this was extremely harrowing and it upset my mother greatly. When I enquired if this was what was happening the staff appeared so blazai as if it was just one of those things!
To me this establishment requires random visits by the Managers and the CQC to see what really goes on.
Had I known about this review site before I would have submitted this long ago. Original Comment Report... |
