My husband was in despair when he was told by a local optician that they could not resolve a problem he had with his eyes and referred him to hospital where he was also told nothing could be done. Waiting for a blood test at St Paul's Medical Centre one day, I realised I was sitting opposite a new Optician and Dry Eye Centre. We made an appointment and thanks to the Optician, he got an appointment for a Cataract operation some time later which has been successful. We both go for our annual eye tests there but this year, because my husband is housebound after a heart operation, they are going to come to us. Would certainly recommend highly. There is a box here that asks when we visited but I cannot get before June 2016 - which is an approximate date. |

I am very perplexed by the previous reviewer's dissatisfaction with Maddox Eyecare.
I have had eye complications from the age of 3 and have therefore seen many opticians and I can say without any reservations that Maddox Eyecare is the most professional I have been to in all aspects of eye care.
They have gone out of their way to treat a serious problem I have had with my lenses sticking to my eye by having a contact specially designed and made for me. They would not charge me for this until the lens was correct.
I have had to have many appointments to sort this out and have not been charged a penny for any of them even those I was unable to attend because I was ill.
I find the optician to be very knowledgeable and an expert in their field. They are also very patient, friendly and approachable and willing to answer in detail any questions I have asked.
I feel very pleased with their service and both my husband, who they see as well, and myself would have no hesitation in recommending them to anymore. |

My partner was diagnosed with optic neuritis in September 2015, which led to a recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. He sent an email to Maddox Eyecare to make an appointment for an eye test & did not receive a reply. He subsequently made an appointment for an eye test at their clinic in St. Pauls Medical Centre.
When he arrived for his eye test appointment, to his dismay their clinic was closed. He spoke to the security guard on the ground floor at St. Pauls Medical Centre, who informed him that the clinic had been open for a short while earlier in the morning. The security guard was very helpful & called the optician, so that my partner could speak to him on the phone. The optician did apologise when my partner explained that he had turned up for his appointment. He then went on to say that 'they' must have written the wrong date down when confirming my partners appointment! My partner found this perplexing, as he had not spoken to another person when making his appointment, he had spoken to the optician directly.
It states on Maddox Eyecare website that their clinic at St. Pauls Medical Centre is open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm. However, my partner made a visit to their clinic on a previous afternoon & their clinic was closed then too. My partner also spoke to a lady who happened to be sat in the waiting area for one of the other clinics on the same floor. She went on to say that she was under the impression that the Maddox Eyecare clinic in St. Pauls Medical Centre was closing down, as every time she visited St. Pauls Medical Centre, the Maddox Eyecare clinic was closed!
We are fully aware that mistakes can be made. However, not only did Maddox Eyecare fail to reply to my partners email, they also failed to turn up at their clinic to carry out a pre-arranged eye test appointment. Maddox Eyecare are members of the Association of Optometrists & registered with the General Optical Council. When a professional eyecare clinic operates in such a way, it does not instil prospective customers with any confidence in their establishment. It is totally unprofessional & unacceptable.
We are very dissatisfied with the service & we will not be recommending Maddox Eyecare to any family or friends. Reply from Maddox Eyecare Fri, 03 Nov 2017 13:55:34 Z I am sorry to hear you are not happy with our Opticians. Unfortunately your partner arrived one day early for his appointment. At the time I was visiting a housebound patient, an appointment arranged before your partner’s. After informing your partner that I had not long left, the medical centre receptionist contacted me and I was able to speak to him. “I/we/they must have jotted it down wrong” is just a standard response. It would serve no benefit to apportion blame in these circumstances. When I spoke to him he was quite cheerful and said he would see me the same time the next day. Subsequently he did not turn up for his appointment or let us know he wouldn’t be. When I telephoned to check that he was okay there was no answer. We are NOT closing down, we just work differently than most Opticians, of which there are already plenty to choose from. We work on an appointment only basis but are always available by telephone as I employ an answering service. Around 50% of our work is visiting the housebound to provide them with much needed eye care. This is usually in the afternoons which is why your partner would have found us closed on his previous visit. The signage on the door would have explained how we operate. The website does need updating. We are always open in the morning and I will often return from home visits to see patients later in the afternoon or those unable to attend during normal working hours. To compensate for running on an appointment only basis we offer extras such as appointments to 7pm and free spectacle delivery. Again, I am sorry to hear of your disappointment. I wish you all the best in finding an Opticians you are more comfortable with. |
