My mum was in Bridge House for three years from January 2012 to May 2015. From the minute she went to live there the consistent kindness and care shown to her and to members of her family was exceptional. I visited most days and always saw the same consistently good care given to all the residents (however cranky they were at times!).
She had lost her memory and was very deaf as well as being a rather fragile 97 year old. The activities and stimulation provided helped her regain her confidence and her health improved gradually until, unfortunately she had a stroke in January 2015.
After the stroke her ability to care for herself declined rapidly and I was worried that she would have to go into a Nursing Home, where I was sure she would be very anxious having to cope with a new situation. However, after discussing this with the owners they assured me that the staff would be able to cope, and they did beautifully. They coped with all the extra care and made light of it to me, in fact they looked after the family as well always offering drinks etc.
During the last few weeks of mum,s life they were turning her every two hours to prevent pressure sores and constantly popping in to make sure she drank water, by this time she didn't want anything to eat although the staff always asked if she would like anything special to eat.
Mum died peacefully in bed on VE day, 8th May 2015. Downstairs the staff were providing a VE day tea for the residents. They were so kind to me making me laugh while waiting for the doctor to arrive. And although I felt so sad that mum had eventually gone I knew that she had been looked after right to the last minutes of her life. |
